Let's go trekking!
But be careful not to get stuck on the steep slopes!

A tile-placement game created by Japanese designer Susumu Kawasaki that has simple rules but is packed with exciting strategy!

Switchbacks is a game with simple rules, but one that requires strategic decision-making.
To score, a hiker must be on a path made up of four consecutive numbers. The player is faced with the following choices:

  • Do you join their path or block it with your own?
  • Should you give up on a surefire placement and try for the perfect space next turn?
  • Is there any guarantee that the space will remain until the next turn?

This is a game that appeals to me because of its sophisticated dilemmas.

The appeal of "Switchbacks"

Simple Rules & Tough Decisions

The difficulty of Switchbacks lies not in the complexity of the rules, but in the strategy between players. The rules can be taught in one minute, and anyone from beginners to experienced players can play competitively right away.

Naturally occurring cooperation

In this game, cooperation and betrayal occur naturally on the table.
While one group may end peacefully, in another a mid-game betrayal may lead to lengthy arguments.

Hidden information

At the start of the game, each player checks one tile and removes it from the game. How you use this little bit of hidden information is the key to winning or losing. You can also use that information to bluff your opponent.
